Suitable Locations
Barn Owl Boxes are commonly installed on mature trees in hedgerows, field edges and open countryside, as well as on agricultural buildings across the UK countryside.
Choosing a Suitable Location
Barn Owls are most often found in open countryside and farmland where they have space to hunt and move through the landscape.
If you are unsure whether your location is suitable before purchasing, please contact us — we are only a phone call away.
Positioning Height
A height of around 12–15ft (3.5–5 metres) is often suitable for external Barn Owl nest boxes where installation is safe and practical.
Location and surrounding habitat are usually more important than achieving an exact height.
Direction of Nest Box
The entrance porch on our nest boxes is designed to provide flexibility when positioning and can help reduce exposure to driving wind and rain throughout the year.
Like natural tree hollows, nest boxes can face in different directions. The sheltered entrance provides additional protection while allowing the box to be positioned where it works best for Barn Owls and practical monitoring.
Nest Box Visibility
Barn Owls benefit from being able to approach and leave the nest box comfortably, especially during regular feeding activity. Where possible, position the entrance so it remains visible to approaching Barn Owls while allowing the box to sit naturally within its surroundings.
Dangers – Disturbance
Consider nearby hazards such as busy roads, regular human activity and areas frequently used by domestic pets. Choose a location that is quiet, secluded and with minimal disturbance where possible
Our Nest Box Designs
Our nest box designs have evolved through many years of practical use and observation across a wide range of rural locations, with every feature chosen to support natural Barn Owl behaviour while simplifying installation, allowing safe monitoring from a distance and improving access for future inspection and cleaning
Contents when Delivered
Your Barn Owl nest box is supplied fully assembled and includes the external platform, entrance porch, fixings and installation guidance. Before use, add approximately 2″ (50mm) of woodshavings to the solid floor to allow a natural nest scrape to form. Woodshavings are widely available and are not included with the nest box. An inspection hatch and removable roof provide access for inspection and future cleaning when required.
