For Tawny Owls, the preferred habitat locations are woodland areas or mixed farmland.

The best height to position the nest box is between 10ft to 14ft. Make sure the box is positioned securely and out of reach of people and grazing animals.

With the porch fixed around the entrance hole, the box can face any direction while offering protection from wind and rain. Boxes without a porch allow driving rain and wind to enter.

The nest box and entrance should be visible from a distance so Tawny Owls can locate it. It is beneficial to position the box close to a branch, helping owlets branch out safely and return to the nest. Ensure foliage does not obscure the entrance. Your nest box acts like a natural tree hollow, so make its presence visible for best results.

To protect your nest box project, consider dangers such as busy roads and railway lines. Traffic can kill owls, so position the box well away from these hazards. Be aware of domestic pets. If installing in a residential garden, please call for advice before purchasing.
